Tell us a bit about you.
Hi everyone! I’m Kim and I’m a 31-year-old writer, teacher, twin mommy, and military wife! I currently live in Texas, but I am originally from Alabama—that’s where my Southern twang comes from! I’m a huge nerd and bookworm and nothing makes me happier than fangirling over all my obsessions! I’m a Gryffindor, a Whovian, and a HUGE GoT fan, just to name a few! I love polka dots and red lipstick, and my personal motto is “have courage and be kind.” I try to leave each day by those words. I love to laugh and I think Edgar Allan Poe is the bee’s knees!
What’s your favorite video you’ve filmed so far?
My favorite video to film so far what definitely the writing tag about my characters. The questions were hilarious and It was so much fun to film! I was totally cracking myself up! It gave me the opportunity to evaluate my characters in a fun, fresh way and I really enjoying making the tag. You can watch it here.
Tell us about your first novel.

My first novel is a YA contemporary fantasy called KEEPER. Here’s the blurb!
Magic always leaves a mark.

When the ghost of a 200-year-old witch attacks her on the road, sixteen-year-old bookworm Lainey Styles is determined to find a logical explanation. But even with the impossible staring her in the face, Lainey refuses to buy in to all that “hocus pocus nonsense”—until she finds a photograph linking the witch to her dead mother.

After the library archives and even Google come up empty, Lainey gives in and consults a psychic. There she discovers that, like her mother, she’s a Keeper: a witch with the exclusive ability to unlock and wield the Grimoire, a dangerous spell book. But the Grimoire is missing, stolen years ago by a malevolent warlock known as the Master. Now that Lainey’s true heritage has been uncovered, she’s the Master’s only hope in opening the Grimoire, where a powerful spell is locked inside—a spell that would allow him to siphon away the world’s magic. In an effort to force her hand, the Master kidnaps Lainey’s uncle and offers a trade: the spell for his life.

With the help of her comic-book-loving, adventure-hungry best friend and an enigmatic but admittedly handsome street fighter, Lainey must leave behind her life of books and studying to prepare for the biggest test of all. She must steal back the book…before her uncle and the entire supernatural race pay the Master’s price.

I started writing the very 1st draft of KEEPER back in 2008, but then life happened (we moved twice, I was working on my Master’s degree, and I gave birth to twins!)and I really wasn’t able to get serious about it until 2013. It took me 3 and half years to finish and polish the manuscript. I remember sitting in the library and bawling my eyes out when I finally typed the words “the end.” It was such an incredible moment and I am so stinking proud of this book!
Do you have a favorite character?
I really love Maggie. She’s the MC’s best friend, and she is definitely the loyal side-kick and comic relief. She’s a huge comic book nerd, so she’s always bringing up Marvel and other nerdy references. She’s spunky and definitely keeps Lainey (the MC) on her toes! Parts of her are based off my real life best friend, so she was super fun to write!
Is there a different genre you want to try?
My current WIP is a YA contemporary romance. I’m really excited about writing it, but also super nervous. I’ve been writing fantasy for years, so this is a big jump for me. I’d also LOVE to write a YA Historical at some point in the future. I adore historical novels, but the idea of writing one is super intimidating to me. Maybe one day!
One piece of advice for those who haven’t written their first book yet.
This may sound cliché, but it’s seriously the best piece of advice I can give: Don’t. Stop. Writing. I know everyone says that, but it’s true. If you want to be a writer, then you have to keep writing no matter what. You will face more opposition and rejection than you ever thought possible, but if you want it bad enough, you have to keep fighting for it. Dreams don’t work unless you do, and nothing worth having comes easy. So, don’t quit!

Nintendo or Sega Genesis?
Oh, that’s a toughie! I grew up with both, but I definitely think I’m more of a Nintendo girl! I still have my Super Nintendo and I am totally a master at Donkey Kong and Turtles in Time!
Three interesting facts about you?
1) I love to sing! I was in choir and theater all through high school and college. I adore show tunes and Disney songs and I would absolutely die if I got the chance to play a Disney princess or perform on a Broadway stage! I sing all the time—including when I’m stuck in traffic jams with the windows rolled down!
2) I am terrible at texting. Just ask my friends and family! When I get a text, I’m usually like “oh! I need to respond to this!” but then I usually get busy and forget. I either don’t reply or answer three hours later! LOL! I need to be better about it!
3) I’m showing my age with this one! My husband calls me “Muttley” because when I get to laughing really hard, almost no sound comes out. It’s like this weird wheezing sound that reminds him of the cartoon character, Muttley. It sounds like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uSTOHa4Im4

Would you rather have fame or fortune?
I think I’d have to go with fortune. With fame, I’d constantly be in the public eye and I like my privacy way too much for that! Plus, it would be nice to live without financial worries! I’d love to be able to provide for my family in that way. It would also be incredible to be in the position to give to those less fortunate than me.

Embarrassing guilty pleasure?
Oh god, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I really love bad reality tv shows. DanceMoms in particular. I don’t know why, but I have watched every single episode and every single season. *ducks head* Don’t judge me! LOL!

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely an extrovert! I’m ridiculously perky and love meeting new people!

Favorites:
Boy band – N’Sync! I’m a 90s child after all! I still know every word to every song!
Cereal– Lucky Charms! Give me all the marshmallows!
Dinosaur– Reptar from Rugrats! 
Disney movie– I can only pick one? Oh goodness! Let’s go with Beauty and the Beast! I like to pretend I’m Belle!

Your thoughts on Self-Publishing
I think self-publishing is fantastic! Some of my favorite books were written by Indie authors. I think self-publishing is super challenging, but an altogether noble way to publish.
Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster? Of course! You don’t?
How do you plan to market your books?

For now, while I seek representation, my main focus is building a following. I just want to build up a community of writers and readers that can support each other. That’s really important to me—connecting writers with other writers. I have a YouTube channel where I post weekly writing videos (www.youtube.com/kimchance1) and I also just started a weekly discussion on Twitter for writers looking to make new friends and writer buddies. The discussion in on Tuesday nights at 9pmCST over on the #Chance2Connect hashtag. Love to have you join us!
Do you have a blog?
I do, though I don’t update nearly as much as I would like! You can read it here: www.kimchance.com/blog
How do you feel about Pinterest?
I like Pinterest, but I’m not particularly good at it, and I am not an obsessive pinner. I do love it for recipes and costume ideas!
Tell us what you are working on now!
A YA Contemporary Romance that does not have a name yet! I call it #ShinyNewBookProject. It’s a story inspired by one of my real life students. She is a special young lady who deserves a happy ending, so I am going to write her one!
What would your dream job be if you weren’t a writer?
I would love to be on Broadway of course, but I’d also love the chance to be a ballet dancer. They are so graceful and beautiful!
Anything else you want to tell us?
Thank you so much for having me!
